WHAT IS HORIZONTAL DIRECTIONAL DRILLING?

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) utilizes a drill rig to install pipe with virtually no excavation necessary. In accordance with design drawings, a drill rig is set up at the ground surface, pushing drill pipe into the ground and establishing the pathway for the product pipe to be installed. The location of the drill pipe is monitored through the use of a locating device at the front of the drill head. Once the operator identifies where the drill head is, he then controls the direction of the drill head by alternately thrusting and rotating the drill pipe until the pilot bore is complete. Once this pilot bore is done and a path has been established for the installation of the pipeline, the hole is then enlarged through a process called reaming. This process may be done as many times as is necessary to create a hole large enough to pull in the final product pipeline.

WHEN CAN I USE DIRECTIONAL DRILLING TECHNOLOGY?

Historically, directional drilling technology was only used where open excavations were not practical such as below stream beds or in environmentally sensitive areas. Through the years, the equipment was refined and perfected and it is now possible to utilize directional drilling in nearly any scenario where pipe must be installed underground.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF DIRECTIONAL DRILLING?

  • Reduced need for excavation
  • Reduced need for site restoration i.e. landscaping, concrete/asphalt repair)
  • Safer construction methods for workers
  • Reduced environmental impact
  • Less disruption to the general public
  • Reduced traffic congestion from construction activities

HOW DOES DIRECTIONAL DRILLING COSTS COMPARE WITH TRADITIONAL OPEN EXCAVATION METHODS?

Depending upon the specific project, directional drilling is typically less expensive than open excavation.

HOW DO YOUR DESIGN-BUILD SERVICES DIFFER FROM OTHERS?

Accu-Bore maintains a suite of software to design various bore profiles. This can include identifying bend radii limitations, length of bore requirements, depth of cover evaluations, and offset from underground conflicts. Utilizing data gathered from the field related to topography, surface features, geotechnical data, and utility information (where available), a detailed bore profile can be generated. Additionally, Accu-Bore offers traditional civil design services for utility routing and sizing.

WHAT OTHER SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE?

Beyond design and directional drilling services, Accu-Bore can also perform turnkey work from cradle to grave including the following;

  • Auger boring
  • Backhoe excavation
  • Encroachment permit submittal
  • Manhole/Vault Installation
  • Pipe Bursting
  • Pipe Jacking
  • Trenching
  • Site restoration including backfill and compaction
  • Utility installation and locating services for electrical, fiber optics, gas lines, sewer lines, telephone/wireless communications, and water mains
